The newly appointed President of Thurles Chamber of Commerce is Mr P.J. Shanahan who takes over from outgoing President Mr Austin Broderick. Austin did a fantastic job in promoting Thurles and its environs in 2011 with the successful launch of the hugely popular Tipperary Fayre and Christmas market.

For those that don’t know him, P.J. Shanahan is from Rahealty, Thurles and works in the Thurles based accountancy practice of Tim Looby Accountants. PJ has served on the Thurles Chamber of Commerce over the last few years and is excited about the opportunity of representing businesses in Thurles and its environs. As an accountant working in Thurles, P.J. has first-hand experience of the difficulties and challenges being currently faced by small and medium sized business especially in the retail trade.

PJ and the Chamber in 2012 will be working hard to promote Thurles as a key shopping destination by encouraging people to support their local town and keep their business in the area.  As PJ says “every euro spent in Thurles and around has a significant impact on local jobs and we can all make our local economy much stronger by spending locally. It’s not about spending more, it’s about spending it locally.” PJ intends to ensure that Thurles is promoted as a shopping and leisure destination and is delighted that Thurles has been nominated as Ireland’s first European Town of Sport which gives us a unique marketing tool to achieve our objectives.

Key initiatives planned for 2012 are;

  • The roll-out of the Thurles CCTV system in the coming year which will greatly enhance the security and safety of locals and visitors.
  • The opening of a new Business Centre in Spring which has been developed in conjunction with L.I.T, North Tipperary County Enterprise Board and Thurles Council. This facility is a state of the art building which will offer subsidised accommodation to budding entrepreneurs.
  • A number of networking events.
  • Continuing to lobby local and national government (through its affiliation with Chambers Ireland) on issues that are vital to small and medium businesses.

There are numerous other inititaives in the pipeline and PJ is looking forward to keeping everyone in the loop about what is happening with your local Chamber of Commerce.

We’re always looking for new members as Thurles needs a stronger Chamber. For further information, please contact PJ Shanahan at Thurles Chamber of Commerce, 2nd Floor, Lar na Pairce, Slievenamon Road, Thurles or via e-mail at pjshanahan@tla.ie.
